The \u201cCovenant Between the Pieces,\u201d which is described in the chapter takes the promise of Abram one step forward. Why forward? Because the covenant ceremony validates the verbal promise. fAlongside the ceremony, a historical prophecy is given that explains exactly how the promise will come to fruition.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the nature of the ceremony? The essence of the covenant ceremony includes the splitting of the animals in two – perhaps a symbolic act that indicates the punishment of anyone who violates the covenant- and the passing of the party to the covenant \u00a0between the animals’ parts. Who is the one who passes through the animal parts in the ceremony? “And so it was, when the sun set and it was dark, there appeared a smoking oven, and a flaming torch which passed between those pieces\u201d (verse 17) – a symbol of divine commitment.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the prophecy? It is a precis of the history from Canaan to Egypt and back: 400 years of enslavement in Egypt, after which the sons of Abram will return to Canaan and receive the land promised to them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Points to ponder:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. The chapter opens with a moment of crisis for Abram. \u00a0Years have passed since the commandment to \u201cleave his homeland\u201d and the promise that he will become a great nation, but in the meantime the aging Abram is losing faith that this will happen. \u00a0\u2018\u2019<\/span>O Lord GOD, what can You give me, seeing that I shall die childless\u2026.Since You have granted me no offspring\u201d (verses 2-3).<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Stars and Infinity. Take note of the the beautiful image in verse 5.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Why the enslavement in Egypt? The idea presented in the \u201cCovenant Between the Pieces\u201d is the notion of historical justice. The sons of Abraham cannot inherit Canaan for the time being “for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete\u201d (verse 16). \u00a0Only when the sins of the Amorites bring them down from the stage of history can the sons of Abraham fulfill their promise and inherit Canaan. Until then, they will wait four generations as slaves in Egypt.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. The covenant is very symbolic: the animals, the old age, who cuts the animals to pieces and who does not.
