In a number of days we will read of Abraham’s attempt to stave off the destruction of Sodom. This argument with God to is viewed by many as the model of Jewish activism. Abraham will not accept God\u2019s decree. He argues and argues and argues until there is no possibility of repealing the decree and preventing the destruction of Sodom\u2019s residents. Abraham is the enemy of apathy, the advocate of the estranged the abused, and even the wicked.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abraham’s intervention is even more remarkable because he is doing his descendants a disservice. God promised Abraham the entire land of Israel. The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah will make it easier when \u201cthe fourth generation\u201d returns to Canaan from their enslavement and oppression.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is motivating Abraham? How can a person be so good, so kind, so merciful?<\/span><\/p>\n

Certainly, he is motivated by justice, and mercy. God reveals the plan because of Abraham’s commitment to justice and righteousness. \u00a0But perhaps deep in the recesses of his subconscious there is also some guilt from an encounter in today\u2019s chapter.<\/span><\/p>\n

When Abraham hears that his nephew was kidnapped he snaps into action. He assembles an army of 318 men and pursue the armies of the four kings. Following a nighttime victory that brings his men all the way to Damascus, Abraham returns south with the inhabitants of Sodom including his nephew, and all of Sodom\u2019s possessions. The grateful king of Sodom greets the returning hero and exclaims \u201cgive me the people, and take the possessions for yourself.\u201d Abraham responds that he wants no association whatsoever with the kings of Sodom. He will not even take a shoelace, lest the king of Sodom claim that he made Abraham rich. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Abraham’s idealism allows for the people and the wealth of Sodom to return home and quickly restore their culture of wickedness. They go back home as if nothing has happened. What if Abraham had said to the king of Sodom: not so fast. I saved them, I am taking them with me.
