Any one of you of all His people, the LORD his God be with him and \u05d5\u05d9\u05e2\u05dc, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaya\u2019al<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">let him go up<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (II Chronicles 36:23). This is known as the Declaration of Cyrus, the royal edict that allowed the Jewish people to return from the Babylonian exile, and rebuild the country and the Temple.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abraham \u201cgoes up\u201d into the land of Canaan, after he \u201cwent down\u201d to Egypt (Gen 12:10). While the Negev highlands are higher than the Nile Delta in an altitudinous sense, throughout Jewish history, the idea of going to the Land of Israel has been perceived as an ascent in a spiritual sense. One \u201cmakes \u05e2\u05dc\u05d9\u05d9\u05d4 <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aliyah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (\u201cascent\u201d) to Israel, and immigrants are known as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018<\/span><\/i><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">olim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; those who have gone up. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost all Hebrew verbs come from a three letter root, and this one &#8211; \u05e2-\u05dc-\u05d4, <em>ayin-lamed-heh <\/em>&#8211; is actually formed from a preposition, the word \u05e2\u05dc, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018al<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201con.\u201d Simply put, if something is on something else, it is higher than it. A poetic way to say \u201chigher\u201d is towards the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018al<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or \u05d0\u05dc-\u05e2\u05dc, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">el \u2018al<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; ElAl &#8211; like the airline. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A distinctive name for God that we meet in the very next chapter (14:18, 19, 20, 22), in the words of King Melchizedek of Salem is \u05d0\u05dc \u05e2\u05dc\u05d9\u05d5\u05df &#8211; <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">el \u2018elyon<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the \u201cSupreme (\u201cmost high\u201d) God.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This root is very productive in modern Hebrew, in everything from that word <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u2018elyon<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">being used to characterize the highest court in the land, the Supreme Court, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beit mishpat \u2018elyon<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to new coinages such as \u05de\u05e2\u05dc\u05d9\u05ea, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ma\u2019alit<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201celevator,\u201d to the very conversational equivalent of \u201chow much does that cost?\u201d &#8211; <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kama zeh \u2018oleh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>?<\/em> &#8211; roughly, how \u201chigh\u201d is that (price), how much will that run me up?
