In the previous chapter Abram returns from Egypt with many possessions. In this chapter we see that disputes over property, even within the family, are as old as the Bible – at least. The abundant amount property of Abram and his nephew Lot led to a situation where “the land could not support them staying together; for their possessions were so great” (Genesis 13:6).<\/span><\/p>\n

What should be done? They separate as friends. Lot chooses to settle in the whole plain of the \u200b\u200bJordan, which was a particularly fertile area before the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (spoiler alert for the next chapter) and Abram remains in Canaan.<\/span><\/p>\n

Points to ponder:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u00a0<\/span> “Let there be no strife between you and me….for we are kinsmen\u201d (13: 8). Cut and save this.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. \u00a0<\/span> The solution chosen for the conflict is separation. In the next chapter we will see that the blood relationship and the concern that stemmed from this connection are well preserved despite the geographical distance.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. \u00a0<\/span> After Abram and Lot separate, God reveals himself to Abram and again validates the promise of the land to his descendants. After separation, Abram needs encouragement. \u00a0Is it because now the question of Abram\u2019s heir becomes more palpable?<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. \u00a0<\/span> \u201cUp, walk about the land\u201d (13:17) is a phrase common in Israeli culture and it comes from here, verse 17. Then it was incorporated into an Israeli song by Yoram Taharlev.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
