Ties bind until they unravel, and the press of affection and memory become a whisper in the wind; all that is solid melts into air. Abram’s split from Lot, however, was a different kind of parting. The sixth verse of today’s chapter proposes a different density of dissolution. “And the land was not able to bear them that they might dwell together; for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.”

The next verse details the inter-personal conflict between Abram’s and Lot’s shepherds, but first the land’s shoulders gave way. Their burden was too much, rather than not enough. And it was felt first deep in the soil and the coiled roots.

Jewish tradition contours the land as vibrant, alive, and seething. It is topographically responsive to sin and virtue, yielding fruits and grain in cascading blessings of bounty or closed and gleaming, inert under a bronze and sin-sealed sky. It can be vomitous or a topography of fecund grace, reflecting and funding a language of love and senses interwoven. The British Romantic poets came to see “England’s green and pleasant land” as roiling with archaic poetic force, and something of France will always be framed by Monet.

Abram and Lot present a startlingly contemporary vision. A struggle where the land itself becomes substrate, one that touches on both territory and allocation of resources, that links conflict to propinquity and ecological incapacity, that locks affluence and scarcity into a choreography of conflict; these plagues are as old as Nineveh, and as recent as Raqqa. We must have the passion, joy, and conviction to bear our land, carried aloft on silver platters and blooming deserts and beauty created and protected. But we must also step lightly enough for the land to bear us, because we tread on dreams, and our footsteps are but the shifting of sand.

-621379a64274a--621379a64274bgen13-sunset
