And what is the place? Did Abram and Lot’s shepherds fight over a physical place? Ostensibly, yes: “the land could not support them (literally, raise them up, 13:6),” that is, there was not enough room for all of them. However, the Torah, with verbal virtuosity, continues the motif of “raising up.” When Abram suggests to Lot to choose which way to go, the text says “Lot looked about him (literally, raised up his eyes) and saw the whole plain of the Jordan” (Genesis 13:10).

The motif of raising one’s eyes is common in the Book of Genesis. The phrase is used with Abraham, Rebecca, Jacob, Esau, and Joseph. However, the first person to raise his eyes is Lot. Raising your eyes is like homing in on a target; it is an aspiration to unite with the place that you are looking at. Lot raises his eyes to the Plains of Jordan, to the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, and his choice turns out to be a terrible mistake.

What is the correct way to raise one’s eyes? The Master of the Universe says to Abram in the continuation of the chapter: “Raise your eyes and look out from where you are….” (13:14). The Torah is precise – do not lift up your eyes to the place you want to reach, but lift up your eyes from the place where you are! You cannot go on a life journey toward a long-awaited goal if you do not know where you are. Without a sense of self and even fullness, confidence in what you have already, you will not succeed in identifying the next place towards which you are raising your eyes. You are not able to choose. However, this is not enough. The text seems to imply that when a person has a sense of place in the world, he has no need to take the place of his companion, and then the land can support both him and his companion.

avraham in
