By calling upon Abram to move on, the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">entire<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> move becomes a religious journey: The many hundreds of miles that separate Ur from Canaan become the sign of mutual choice. A look at any map of the region shows that most of the land between is the great desert in today&#8217;s Jordan and Syria. The only way to travel it by foot or animal is by following the rivers that run north-south: (the Euphrates, or the Tigris, if one wished also to bear east) and then one of \u00a0the east-west streams, eventually reaching a tributary of the Jordan river, which one could follow south and enter Canaan. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An intimidating journey, a once-in-a-lifetime move. The offspring of the chosen man will eventually populate the chosen place to which he has come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some 800 years later the kingdom of Judah was destroyed, and the Babylonians exiled its people. The route of exile to southern Babylon is effectively the same as Abram&#8217;s, in reverse. The main centers of Jewish settlement in Babylon were along the southern Euphrates, and the route of \u00a0the &#8220;Babylonian death march&#8221; for thousands of Judean captives was, by necessity, the same. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it surprising, then, to find in Jeremiah and Ezekiel, prophets at that time, echoes of the Jews&#8217; wondering whether the exile indicated their having been &#8220;de-chosen&#8221; by God?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When some of the Jews returned to Judea in the wake of Cyrus&#8217;s Declaration in 538 BCE they followed the same route back; they saw themselves as the new exodus, redeemed by God, Cyrus and their choice to begin again.
