So much has been written and explicated and said about this commandment “Go forth!” (Genesis 12:1), about the voice that called Abram and Abram’s response. And if we read the verses carefully again, without midrashim, God’s command and promise to Abram sound even more surprising, abrupt, in the middle of nowhere, \u201cGo forth and I will bless you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This is really very impressive, but I get stuck on the verse “Abram took his wife Sarai” (12:5), the one who only a few verses ago was described as \u201cbarren, she had no child\u201d (Genesis 11:31). But God said, and Abram does not ask Sarai, nor does he consult or invite her. He simply takes her.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abram is the prototypical believer, who devotes himself to God’s word without question, with complete faith. But who else pays the price? And what is the direct and indirect price he pays? And is it a price worth paying? \u00a0In halachic Jewish thought, the word of God or His embodiment in halakhah is above all, and when you have to choose between halacha (Jewish law) and your own good or that of someone whom you love or even your acquaintances, there is no doubt what the decision is supposed to be.<\/span><\/p>\n

Maybe it is not possible to lead a world in dialogue and consideration of all the details. Maybe it is not possible to create a revolution or a community when you take into account a barren woman who can barely open her grief-stricken eyes in the morning, or a mother with a sick or just confused child, or a father who could not sleep at night out of concern, or a friend who needs his distant friend on Shabbat.<\/span><\/p>\n

When you are changing the world or when you try to keep it from being damaged, it is hard to think of each breath that is generated by grief or shock, but what happens in the world with all these wrinkles in one\u2019s soul? And why is there anyone who is astonished at Abram’s behavior in Egypt?<\/span><\/p>\n
