What do we really know about Sarah, apart from her role as Abraham\u2019s wife?<\/span><\/p>\n

The Talmud (Megillah 14a) identifies the \u201cYiska\u201d mysteriously referred to in Genesis 11:29 as Sarah, and suggests the root of \u201c<\/span>yiska<\/span><\/em>\u201d (\u05e1.\u05d5.\u05db.), which means \u201clook,\u201d can tell us more about her: \u201cshe <\/span>looked<\/span><\/em>\u201d via prophecy. Sarah was a <\/span>seer<\/b>; she had her own relationship with God, signified by a name attached to her even before she was Avraham\u2019s wife, when she was simply Haran\u2019s daughter and an independent personality.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, nothing in Talmud is straightforward. An alternative interpretation is offered which suggests the \u201clooking\u201d went in the other direction: \u201ceveryone looked at her beauty.\u201d Sarah was <\/span>seen<\/b>, admired for her appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Which is correct? Was she active or passive? Physical or spiritual?<\/span><\/p>\n

Maybe Sarah was all of the above and more; maybe these insights are not mutually exclusive, but point to different qualities of a complex individual.<\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, Rashi quotes both of these insights into the name \u201cYiska\u201d in his comment on 11:29, separated not with \u201cor\u201d but with \u201cand.\u201d In fact, she was all that and more: Rashi adds a third interpretation as well, connecting \u201c<\/span>yiska<\/span><\/em>\u201d with a different Hebrew word, \u05e0\u05e1\u05d9\u05db\u05d5\u05ea, which means \u201cprinceliness\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sarah was seen and she was a seer; she had personal appeal and a personal connection to God; and she brought those qualities to her marriage and shared mission with the dignity of a true princess.
