And Terach took Abraham his son\u2026and they set out together from Ur Casdim.<\/span><\/p>\n

I remember as a kid learning about Abraham\u2019s childhood. Mostly I recall the incredible stories surrounding these verses told to us by our rabbi. How Abraham recognized God at a young age, despite living in a culture replete with idolatry. How Abraham destroyed all but one of his father\u2019s idols; and then cleverly blamed the damage on the one remaining idol holding an ax. How Abraham stood up to the evil tyrant Nimrod, miraculously escaping from the fiery furnace, and yet, none of those beautiful midrashim are in the actual Torah.<\/span><\/p>\n

Surprisingly, the text of the Torah is completely silent about Abraham\u2019s early life. Until God charges him with Lech Lecha<\/em>, we know of his brother\u2019s death, of his wife\u2019s inability to conceive, of his father\u2019s decision to leave Ur Casdim for Canaan, but nothing about the first Jew. Why the silence?<\/span><\/p>\n

I think the silence is due to our unique natures. Each of us has our own origin story that leads us to the community in which we live, and the Jewish life that we lead. Had Abraham\u2019s path of becoming the first Jew been mentioned in the Torah would there be a correct path to Jewish life, and an incorrect path? The silence allows for each of our journeys to Jewish life, no matter how different, to follow in the footsteps of our father Abraham. <\/span><\/p>\n

If you came to Jewish life due to philosophical inquiry you are following the path of Abraham, if you were drawn in by the intellectual rigor of Talmud story, you are following the path of Abraham, if you are here to participate in the Jewish challenge of repairing the world, you are following the path of Abraham. <\/span><\/p>\n
