So much is embedded in just those few verses, 26-32: The birth of Terah’s children (Abram, Nachor, and Haran); the birth of his grandson (Lot); the death of his son Haran during his lifetime; the marrying off of his remaining two sons (Nahor to Milka and Abram to Sarai); and Sarai’s infertility. Of this last event we are told, “But Sarai was barren; she had no child” (Gen. 11: 30). After a litany of births recounted in the previous verses (10-25), all encapsulated by the repeating phrase “and [he] begot sons and daughters,” Sarai’s inability to reproduce stands out in stark contrast. How does a family react to infertility, especially in a context of seemingly effortless fertility? How might they cope? Terah offers one method:

“Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and they set out together from Ur of the Chaldeans for the land of Canaan; but when they had come as far as Haran, they settled there” (Gen. 11:31).

Terah responded to family struggle with movement. Perhaps his son and daughter-in-law felt paralyzed by their misfortune and their tragic difference. Perhaps they languished in immobilizing despair. So Terah, one step removed from the situation but deeply affected by it, took matters into his own hands. He “took” his grief-stricken son and daughter-in-law and inspired them to find a way forward. Whether through escape from a pernicious environment that reminded them of their sorrow or through the empowerment born of changing one’s circumstances, Terah inaugurated a journey toward life.

Indeed, lech lecha is what follows. Abram’s journey with God toward covenant and toward progeny will begin in the next verse (Gen. 12:1). One wonders what might become possible when we step away from paralysis, when we embrace movement. The voice of God and of hope just might emerge there.
