The tenth chapter of Genesis is not the most scintillating chapter. \u00a0The lineage of the sons of Noah, and their dispersion throughout the land. Where are the sinners and saints? The inventors, the murderers, and where is the Creator?<\/span><\/p>\n

Even the famed Biblical villain Nimrod, blackened by the Midrash as the force behind the building of the tower of Babylon and Abraham\u2019s enemy, is simply a hunter before God. Why are these generations so <\/span>pareve<\/span><\/i>?<\/span><\/p>\n

Two words: After the flood (in Hebrew it is only two words <\/span>Ahar Hamabool<\/span><\/i>). The chapter begins \u201cthese are the generations of the sons of Noah, of Shem, Ham, and Yafet. The sons born to them <\/span>after the flood<\/b>.\u201d The chapter concludes \u201cthese are the families of the sons of Noah according to their nations. From them, the nations spread out over the land <\/span>after the flood<\/b>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

For these people, for hundreds of years, the backdrop of their lives, their beginning and end was the flood. It was the dominant frightening tale of what can go terribly wrong. The trauma of death and destruction paralyzed their creativity. In chapters four and five, the list of descendants <\/span>includes<\/span> a man who walks with God and disappears, the creator of musical instruments, the forger of copper and iron, the first to call God by name, and a murderer. But here nothing. No creativity, no inventions, no technological breakthroughs, only: after the flood.<\/span><\/p>\n
