10:8 \u201cCush also begot Nimrod, who was the first man of might (<\/span>gibor<\/span><\/em>, <\/span><\/i>\u05d2\u05d9\u05d1\u05d5\u05e8) on earth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Nimrod is the first <\/span>gibor<\/span><\/em>, translated here as \u201cman of might.\u201d Later he is referred to as <\/span>gibor tzayid<\/span><\/em>, \u201ca mighty hunter.\u201d Ask any Israeli child who or what a \u05d2\u05d9\u05d1\u05d5\u05e8, <\/span>gibor<\/span><\/em>, is, and they will say a hero. It could be a <\/span>gibor milchamah<\/span><\/em>, a war hero, or a <\/span>gibor-‘al<\/span><\/em>, a superhero, of the comic book variety. That applies to <\/span>giborah<\/span><\/em>, fem., a brave, valiant or heroic female, as well. <\/span><\/p>\n

The general idea is related to strength or exertion towards a goal. The root is \u05d2-\u05d1-\u05e8, <\/span>g-b\/v-r<\/span><\/em>, and this underlies a number of basic words. The noun \u05d2\u05d1\u05e8, <\/span>gever<\/span><\/em>, <\/span><\/i>means adult male (and actually originally referred to a rooster). But it means more than \u05d0\u05d9\u05e9, <\/span>ish<\/span><\/em>, generic for “man,” since the word <\/span>gever<\/span><\/em>, emphasizes “masculinity” (<\/span>gavriut<\/span><\/em>) or being “manly” (<\/span>gavri<\/span><\/em>). There is a female version \u2013 <\/span>giveret<\/span><\/em> \u2013 but this means more like “lady” or “Mrs.” \u2013 as in <\/span>giveret Cohen<\/span><\/em>, Mrs. Cohen. In fact, in Genesis 16 we will meet Sarai and Hagar, a servant girl (or handmaid) and “her mistress” –\u00a0gvirtah.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The alpha-male heroic model contrasts with the classic rabbinic tradition, which has a very different definition: \u201c<\/span>Eyzehu <\/span>gibor<\/span><\/em>?\u201d they asked (Avot 4:1), “Who is a [true] hero? <\/span>Hakovesh et <\/span>yitzro<\/span><\/em>, one who can conquer their own inclinations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And in the kabbalistic tradition,\u00a0<\/span>gevurah<\/span><\/em>\u00a0is one of the ten <\/span>sefirot<\/span><\/em>, emanations or facets of God. It is stands opposite to <\/span>chesed<\/span><\/em>, and refers to God’s power or judgment, as opposed to mercy or love. The angel <\/span>Gavriel<\/span><\/em>, Gabriel (Jibril in Arabic) is connected to this, as the name is to the root. God’s power for instance is evident in the triumph of life over death, referenced in the second blessing of the <\/span>‘amidah<\/em> <\/span>prayer in the liturgy that speaks of eternal life, and is thus known as <\/span>birkat hegevurot<\/span><\/em>. Likewise, a person who has reached the venerable age of 80, is said to have <\/span>higi’a legevurot<\/span><\/em>,<\/em> has reached the age of valor.<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether a <\/span>gibor<\/span><\/em> has internal or spiritual valor or heroism is a question of world-view. The Zionist revolution tried to create (or bring back), a “Judaism of muscles,” to use Max Nordau’s term, and the importance of physical valor or courage.
