The root is \u05d2-\u05d1-\u05e8, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">g-b\/v-r<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and this underlies a number of basic words. The noun \u05d2\u05d1\u05e8, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gever<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">means adult male (and actually originally referred to a rooster). But it means more than \u05d0\u05d9\u05e9, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ish<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, generic for &#8220;man,&#8221; since the word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gever<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, emphasizes &#8220;masculinity&#8221; (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gavriut<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) or being &#8220;manly&#8221; (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gavri<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). There is a female version \u2013 <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">giveret<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 but this means more like &#8220;lady&#8221; or &#8220;Mrs.&#8221; \u2013 as in <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">giveret Cohen<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Mrs. Cohen. It is stands opposite to <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chesed<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and refers to God&#8217;s power or judgment, as opposed to mercy or love. The angel <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gavriel<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Gabriel (Jibril in Arabic) is connected to this, as the name is to the root. Likewise, a person who has reached the venerable age of 80, is said to have <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higi&#8217;a legevurot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>,<\/em> has reached the age of valor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gibor<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has internal or spiritual valor or heroism is a question of world-view. The Zionist revolution tried to create (or bring back), a &#8220;Judaism of muscles,&#8221; to use Max Nordau&#8217;s term, and the importance of physical valor or courage.
