But in the biblical text, Nimrod makes a subtle appearance, tucked into the genealogy, from Noah to Abraham, which while dense with names, is sparse with details about the people behind them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is the only animated character in the long list of names\/nations, but what we learn about him is highly ambiguous. He is the \u201cfirst man of might on earth,\u201d a \u201cmighty hunter,\u201d \u201cbefore the LORD\u201d. The first to be mighty? Sounds positive, especially when paired with the Lord. But what if it means \u2018opposite\u2019 the Lord? As in, exercising might against the Divine? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ambiguity in Nimrod\u2019s legacy is compounded by the word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heichel<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u05d4\u05d7\u05dc), translated above as \u2018first\u2019. The word has two possible roots: to begin, or to desecrate. In fact, this word appears four different times in the opening 11 chapters; with each time, the word introduces human behavior whose significance is inconclusive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take chapter 4, for example. In the time of Enosh, man began (\u05d4\u05d7\u05dc) to call on the name of the LORD. Commentators are split: did they begin to pray, or begin to worship idolatry? The slipperiness of early human behavior in Genesis reflects the essential vulnerabilities in the human project: to actualize God\u2019s image in the world, without overstepping boundaries\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or underselling their potential. Nimrod &#8212; seeker of power, leader of men &#8211; is no exception to this pattern. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":88502,"id":88502,"title":"ps106-human
