Seventy is a typological number in the Bible; i.e., a symbolic number, whose appearance is meant to convey an idea\u2014the breadth of diversity\u2014rather than a precise amount. In fact, if you tabulate the exact number of names appearing in the chapter, it slightly exceeds seventy, which is only fair because when the Torah later names the descendants of Jacob who accompanied him to Egypt (Genesis 46), it stipulates that there were seventy, even though a precise count yields only sixty-nine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabbinic tradition used seventy for the Sanhedrin, the number of languages its members were expected to speak, and the number of elders who translated the Torah into Greek. It also assumed the symbolic nature of other biblical numbers, ruling that administering forty lashes meant only thirty-nine, and counting fifty days of the Omer required only forty-nine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of these descendants is given special mention: Nimrod, described as a valiant hunter and the world\u2019s first monarch. The Sages cast him as an arch-villain, who instigated the building of the Tower of Babel (tomorrow\u2019s chapter) and cast the Patriarch Abraham into the furnace. Abraham Ibn Ezra, however, argued that the unadorned text supports a contrary conclusion: Nimrod trapped animals and offered them to God as sacrifices. Nachmanides called that \u201ca whitewash.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you
