It is reflected in this beautifully concise line, a chiastically structured short poem (ABC\/CBA) followed by a profound statement of theological anthropology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05e9\u05c1\u05b9\u05e4\u05b5\u05da\u05b0 \u05d3\u05bc\u05b7\u05dd \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05d3\u05b8\u05dd \u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05d3\u05b8\u05dd \u05d3\u05bc\u05b8\u05de\u05d5\u05b9 \u05d9\u05b4\u05e9\u05bc\u05c1\u05b8\u05e4\u05b5\u05da\u05b0 \/ \u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05e6\u05b6\u05dc\u05b6\u05dd \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05e2\u05b8\u05e9\u05c2\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05d3\u05b8\u05dd<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed\/ For in His image did God make man.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though short in words, the verse makes three critical points about the post-deluvian world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first, is that human beings are sacred. There had been bloodshed in the past \u2013 Cain, Lemech perhaps \u2013 but no retribution. Paradoxically, the shedding of human blood requires that more blood be shed. Otherwise, the land becomes defiled. Second is that justice is in the hands of humans. There will be no appeal to the divine court. One who violates the law must be punished <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by humankind<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>.<\/em> And finally, there must, therefore, be law in the world. We cannot rely upon people to \u201cdo good\u201d intuitively: God had seen that \u201cevery plan of the human heart was nothing but evil\u201d (6:5).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point in the formation of the world as we know it, then, comes the birth of human responsibility and the quest for a just society. It does not quickly work \u2013 as the Tower of Babel is about to show \u2013 and this will bring us to the need for a chosen people, beginning with Abraham in chapter 12. The poetics of this new world order underscores the sacred calling and responsibility to establish, maintain and implement justice. It is what drives the formation of the community that will
