We don\u2019t know who the perpetrator was. The verse speaks of Ham, but he was not the youngest son, and Noah doesn\u2019t curse Ham he curses his grandson Canaan. \u00a0We also don\u2019t know what was done to Noah. Ham sees his father\u2019s nakedness and tells his brothers about it. Is the offense that he is body shaming his father? Or does the word <em>vayeda<\/em> &#8220;and he knew&#8221; point to a sexual encounter, similar to Adam \u201cknowing\u201d his wife back in chapter 4?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It appears that the Torah is purposely ambiguous, Noah knew exactly what was done to him, but we will never know. Perhaps this a lesson about modesty, hiding the offense done to Noah, to not shame him further. Perhaps it is a life lesson, we can never truly know and understand the effects of sexual abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Either way, the purposeful ambiguity aligns with our general understanding of Noah. Was he truly righteous, or only when measured against the wicked generation that he was born into? Was he justified in cursing his grandson, or did he go too far with the harsh words?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a truly sad ending to the dramatic life of Noah. The child born with the hope \u201cThis one will provide us relief from our work and from the toil,\u201d has condemned some of his descendants to the misery and toil of slavery that he was destined to repair.
