Noah just wants to go back to the good old days.<\/span><\/p>\n

He is, like Adam, an <\/span>Ish Adamah<\/span><\/i>, a man of the earth. But in the new covenant God has created, the earth will no longer be held accountable for humankind’s sins. This represents a further distancing from the Edenic state of harmony between <\/span>Adam<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Adamah<\/span><\/i>. So Noah tries to force a return. He plants a garden of sorts, and drinks himself back into a naked, pre-knowledge state of being. After all, wasn’t this the way the world was supposed to be?<\/span><\/p>\n

But rather than bring Eden closer, this act of self-deception pushes it even further away. The reality of the post-flood world had introduced the necessity of a hierarchy between man and animal, reflected in the distinction between taking the life of an animal and the life of a human. Noah seems to be reluctant to embrace this new reality, and his misguided attempt to try to undo it, to live in a mythical Garden, ultimately causes the introduction of further hierarchy, this time between humans, with the invention of slavery in Noah’s curse. “Cursed is Canaan, a slave of slaves will he be to his brothers” (9:25). <\/span><\/p>\n

Noah is right to want to return to Eden. But he is wrong to think that the clock can be set back, or that new realities can be ignored.
