Chapter 10: What if they called you Tiras (“sweetcorn”)?<\/span><\/p>\n

Meet “all the families of the earth,” meaning all the peoples of the world, who are essentially the children and grandchildren of Shem, Ham and Japheth. The chapter is a kind of written map. The children of Ham, the children of Shem and the children of Japheth divide up the ancient Near East in an orderly fashion.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are several names of nations on this list that are recognizable, names that will still rise on the stage of history over time: Madai, Javan, Ashknaz, Tarshish, Cush and Mizrayim, Canaan, Babylon and Accad, Asshur and more …<\/span><\/p>\n

There are also funny names, at least for the modern Hebrew speakers: Tiras (\u201ccorn\u201d), Raamah (\u201cmane\u201d), Sabteca (\u201cGranny\u201d), and Caphtorim (\u201cbuttons\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n

And there is one hero, an extraordinary figure on the whole list: Nimrod, who was the founder of cities and kingdoms in Mesopotamia. And when people in the time of the Bible wanted to say that you are a hero, they would say: “Like Nimrod a mighty hunter by the grace of the Lord\u201d (10:9).<\/span><\/p>\n

Points to ponder:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u00a0<\/span> At this stage of the story, the Bible is still interested in the world at large and not just in our national story. Nevertheless, our national story begins to be of interest – only Canaan is mentioned in its geographical boundaries (verse 19).<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. \u00a0<\/span> We are S(h)emites, right? (At least those who are against us are anti-Semites). So look for us in verses 21-31.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. \u00a0<\/span> If Nimrod intrigues you, you may be happy to know that there is a city called Nimrod somewhere in Mesopotamia (the ancient city of Tel Kalana). But there is no \u00a0reliable external evidence of a king by this name who is a hero and conqueror.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. \u00a0<\/span> Another name about whom there is a story is Peleg, “for in his days the earth was divided\u201d (verse 25), but this will be told in the next chapter.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
