The new beginning is promising and organized. God blesses Noah and his sons who came out of the ark with the same blessing God had given the first man, immediately after he was created: “Be fertile and increase, and fill the earth” (Genesis 9: 1). The blessing is the same blessing, but the arrangements of life change, and man’s control of the living world expands. Thus, after ten generations of vegetarianism (from Adam to Noah), humans are allowed to eat meat from animals–with certain restrictions.<\/span><\/p>\n

The new life arrangements also include the first social law: the prohibition of murder. It is a law that is styled surprisingly as a poem (9:6):<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhoever sheds the blood of man
\n<\/span>By man shall his blood be shed;
\n<\/span>For in His image
\n<\/span>Did God make man.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The new beginning also includes a covenant of peace and a promise that there will not be another flood, a promise that is validated and symbolized ever since by the beautiful sign of the rainbow in the clouds. \u00a0But a moment after the promise and the new order begin, human chaos emerges again: Noah plants a vineyard, yes, a vineyard, and then what follows is drunkenness, nakedness, disgrace, and a curse proving that \u201cthe devisings of man\u2019s mind are evil from its youth\u201d (8:21).<\/span><\/p>\n

Points to ponder:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u00a0<\/span> The abolition of vegetarianism (verse 3). This is a moment that is not easy for the venerable vegans among us.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. \u00a0<\/span> Why is it forbidden to shed human blood? Because \u201cin His image did God make man\u201d (9:6). \u00a0Harming a human being is tantamount to harming God. However, the responsibility to correct\/punish, actually rests on man–\u201dBy man shall his blood be shed.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. \u00a0<\/span> Who needs a sign that there will not be another flood? According to verse 15, it is God that needs the reminder (“Stop Me before I …”)?<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. \u00a0<\/span> Why a rainbow? Imagine a picture of a bow hanging in the sky. Without arrows. Not directed toward the inhabitants of the land. Just a beautiful decoration on a rainy day.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In the verse 20, Noah is referred to as the “tiller of the soil\u201d and perhaps in planting the vineyard he fulfills the hope that was embedded in his name: “This one will provide us relief from our work and from the toil of our hands, out of the very soil which the Lord placed under a curse\u201d (5:29).<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":86314,"id":86314,"title":"Points to
