{"id":35085,"date":"2018-07-23T23:58:25","date_gmt":"2018-07-23T20:58:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=35085"},"modified":"2022-02-14T17:45:29","modified_gmt":"2022-02-14T15:45:29","slug":"the-power-of-memory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/the-power-of-memory\/","title":{"rendered":"The Power of Memory"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[384,405],"acf":{"old_id":"35085","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":34891,"related_cahpter":"8","type_929":"2","show_author_image":true,"old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"Pulling back from the brink of total annihilation","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This chapter opens with first act of remembering in Tanakh: \u00a0\u201cGod remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the cattle that were with him in the ark\u201d (8:1). \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the last two chapters the creation has been progressively undone. \u00a0The plants and birds, animals and humans (Days 3, 5, 6) are gone (7:21-23), and even the waters that were separated on Day 2 of creation (1:6-7) have rushed back together (7:11) and threaten to return the world to welter and waste (1:2). \u00a0\u201cThe waters surged over the earth one hundred and fifty days\u201d (7:24) &#8211; And then, \u201cGod remembered.\u201d Just before the world would be returned to chaos, to \u201cdarkness over the deep and God\u2019s breath (<\/span><em>ruah Elokim<\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hovering over the waters\u201d (1:2), God remembers, and \u201cGod sent a wind (<\/span><em>va-ya\u2019aver Elokim ruah<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) over the earth\u201d (8:1) to dissipate the water. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What did God remember? \u00a0Noah and all the animals, helpless in the ark. \u00a0What about them? Rashi suggests: their righteousness. Ramban notes that animals are not moral actors &#8211; rather what God \u201cremembered\u201d about them was God\u2019s initial desire to create the world. \u00a0God still wanted that world, and the species with which God had populated it. So God pulled away from the brink of total annihilation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This about face at the last moment happens through memory, through transporting past events and a past disposition into the present. \u00a0God remembered Noah. From this moment on, even though Noah and his family and the animals still had months left in the ark, their trajectory was changed, perhaps without them even knowing it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Rosh Hashanah, we open the biblical citations in the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zikhronot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (memorials) portion of the prayer with this verse: God remembered Noah. \u00a0We pray that we too may be pulled back from the brink, whether or not we see the results immediately, and that we experience the winds
