This actually means &#8220;He will remember,&#8221; referring to divine consideration \u2013 which is actually what Noah and his arkmates received.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The root of the Hebrew word for &#8220;memory&#8221; is \u05d6-\u05db-\u05e8 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>z-ch-r<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(where the softer &#8220;ch&#8221; sound becomes a hard &#8220;k&#8221; at the beginning of a syllable). Words based on this root fall into two groups: those related to death, and everything else. In addition to <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yizkor<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there is<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">memorial service held at graveside is an <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">azkarah<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Referring to a person who is deceased, one can add the acronym \u05d6&#8221;\u05dc <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><\/i><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zal<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u05d6\u05db\u05e8\u05d5\u05e0\u05d5\/\u05d4 \u05dc\u05d1\u05e8\u05db\u05d4 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>zichrono\/a livrachah,<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;may his\/her memory be for a blessing&#8221;. And the sages of Talmudic times are collectively known as \u05d7\u05d6&#8221;\u05dc <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chazal<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> short for \u05d7\u05db\u05de\u05d9\u05dd \u05d6\u05db\u05e8\u05d5\u05e0\u05dd \u05dc\u05d1\u05e8\u05db\u05d4 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>chachamim<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(&#8220;wise ones&#8221;), <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zichronam <\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">memories, pl., their) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>livrachah<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(for a blessing)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 sages of blessed memory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The general noun \u05d6\u05d9\u05db\u05e8\u05d5\u05df <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>zikaron<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unites the different nuances of the English terms &#8220;memorial,&#8221; &#8220;remembrance,&#8221; and also &#8220;memory&#8221; &#8211; what one remembers, and how. I live in a town in Israel named in memory of James Rothschild by his son the &#8220;generous benefactor,&#8221; Baron Edmond de Rothschild, and so is called \u05d6\u05db\u05e8\u05d5\u05df \u05d9\u05e2\u05e7\u05d1, Zichron Ya&#8217;akov, using the father&#8217;s Hebrew name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, another Israeli place name (and bit of Rothschild lore), is the town of Mazkeret Batya, named for James&#8217; wife, Betty. \u05de\u05d6\u05db\u05e8\u05ea, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mazkeret<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, here means a token or a memorial, to the Lady Rothschild. In regular spoken Hebrew, though, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mazkeret<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more commonly signifies &#8220;a souvenir&#8221; (from the French, &#8220;to remember&#8221;).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most Jewish holidays, including Shabbat, are said to be observed in &#8220;memory of,&#8221; <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zecher<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one or both of two foundational acts: <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zecher ma&#8217;aseh breshit<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remembering the act of Creation, and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zecher leyetziat mitzrayim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, remembering the Exodus from Egypt. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This sort of &#8220;memory&#8221; is the very subjective and collectively transmitted narrative of identity, according to historian Yosef Yerushalmi.
