Chapter 8: \u00a0The calm after the storm<\/span><\/p>\n

The chapter begins with the great calm after the storm (i.e. the flood). This calm can be imagined literally, for there is not a single living creature outside the ark that is around to make a noise. Together with Noah and the animals that are in the ark, we, the readers, wait. We wait for quite a while: 150 days, the ark rocks back and forth on the water until it rests on Mount Ararat. Another forty days pass before anyone dares to open the hatch and send birds to scout out and see if it is possible to leave. \u00a0First a raven, then a dove, and finally another dove.<\/span><\/p>\n

And then, exactly a year after the flood began, all the survivors exit the ark to start over.<\/span><\/p>\n

How do you start over?<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u00a0<\/span> With thanks – Noah builds an altar and sacrifices offerings.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. \u00a0<\/span> With a promise – God promises not to destroy the world anymore because of human beings.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. \u00a0<\/span> With God coming to terms – \u00a0that \u201cthe devisings of man\u2019s mind are evil from his youth\u201d (8:21).<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. \u00a0<\/span> With a blessing, a covenant, and a new arrangement-although the latter is in the next chapter.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Points to ponder:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. \u00a0<\/span> Ararat – Why Ararat? Why not something more \u201cIsraeli\u201d? Perhaps this is a hint of the non-biblical flood stories told in ancient times.<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. \u00a0<\/span> The brave birds that scout out the area do so gradually. The first sign of life in the world is the one brought by the dove on her second mission “and there in its bill was a plucked-off olive leaf\u201d (verse 11). And since then a dove with an olive leaf is a sign of peace and hope.<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. \u00a0<\/span> The greatest hope is independence. When the dove does not return to the ark, it is a sign that is safe enough outside (verse 12).<\/span><\/li>\n
    4. \u00a0<\/span> How many seasons are there in a year? According to verse 22 – perhaps six or three, it depends on how one counts: “Seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter\u201d
