Later on in Genesis, God will remember Abraham and Rachel and His covenant. However, it seems that remembering was not sufficient to stop the flood in order to make a decision not to bring further destruction to the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What did affect God\u2019s decision? &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and&#8230;he offered burnt offerings on the altar.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lord smelled the pleasing odor, and the Lord said to Himself: \u201cNever again will I doom the earth because of man, since the devisings of man\u2019s mind are evil from his youth; nor will I ever again destroy every living being, as I have done<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; (Genesis 8:20-21). The smell of a sacrifice is what did it? Is this what caused God to forgive humanity?! Does a Being that has no body or corporeality have the ability to smell?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Numerous commentaries address these questions. Abraham Ibn Ezra explains God willingly accepted Noah&#8217;s sacrifice. \u00a0Or, as Radak, Rabbi David Kimchi, states&#8211;&#8220;the Torah expresses itself using language common to human beings.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In contrast to the above interpretations, the author of the work HaKetav V\u2019hakabalah explains that what God \u201csmelled\u201d were man\u2019s good deeds. What was Noah&#8217;s good deed? The midrash says: \u201c\u2018The<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n Noah built\u2019 <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vayiven Noach<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026 should be understood to mean based on similar Hebrew root words, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nitbonen Noach<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2018Noah observed (or understood).\u2019\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Man also knows how to observe, to use his intelligence and to build (for the first time!) an altar to thank God for having rescued him, and to use all that surrounds him to elevate his existence. The smell of the good deed seems to awaken the memory that man can do good in the world, that man is not evil in his essence, but that evil enters into him at different times. And if man wants, he only needs to observe and build, and the scent of his good deeds will will rise before God and be
