The twenty-four verses of the chapter are divided almost equally between the destruction that the flood brought and the preservation of life, for which the ark was built.<\/span><\/p>\n

What’s going on outside?<\/span><\/p>\n

In the flood, the upper waters are reconnected to the lower waters. The floodgates of the sky above and the abyss of the great deep below cover the surface of the earth, and the world goes back nearly to its state before creation: without sky, without land, without vegetation and without life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Almost. Because in the midst of the chaos there was a small nature reserve: the ark Noah built.<\/span><\/p>\n

And who is saved inside? Noah, his wife, his sons and their wives.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two by two – that is, one pair after another pair, of all types of animals. In fact, this was not the case with all of them. \u00a0From the pure animals, seven pairs of each species were gathered into the ark. Why? This was pre-planning for the offering of animal sacrifices after the flood.<\/span><\/p>\n

Points to Ponder:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u00a0<\/span> There are lots of numbers in the chapter. This creates a sense of order within the catastrophe. This seems to be a planned destruction ….<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. \u00a0<\/span> For “forty days and forty nights” it rained (verse 12). And if this number sounds familiar to you, it is only because, as a typological number, it signals in the Bible other things that take (in Biblical terms) a relatively long time.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. \u00a0<\/span> “The floodgates of the sky broke open” (verse 11). This expression shows us the way the architecture of the world was perceived – the rain falls when the windows are opened in the sky (in the next chapter, at the end of the flood, they will “be stopped up”).<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. \u00a0<\/span> The details used to describe the animal world that was destroyed by the flood echoes expressions used in the creation of the world. Especially “all in whose nostrils was the merest breath of life\u201d (7:22 parallel to 2:7). Back to chaos, as we have already said.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":86314,"id":86314,"title":"Points to
