Chapter 7 should sound familiar to anyone who has witnessed, or experienced, a parent who threatening their child with a punishment they really don’t want to deliver.<\/span><\/p>\n

“This time I really mean it\u2026”<\/span><\/p>\n

“This is your very last chance\u2026”<\/span><\/p>\n

“Five. Four\u2026\u2026Threeeee\u2026..Twooooooooooooo\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026..Onnnnnnnnnnnnnnne\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026”<\/span><\/p>\n

The countdown gets slower and slower, with the desperate hope that the child will do something to deserve redemption.<\/span><\/p>\n

The careful reader will hear the same hesitation in our chapter. The command to bring the animals into the ark which was given in chapter 6 is repeated. But now, it is even more animals. 7 more days are given. Everyone enters the ark in verse 7, and then enters once again in verse 13. And when the rain begins to fall, Rashi says, God “brings it down with mercy, so that if they repent, they will be rains of blessing.” It is as if the Torah is stalling, hoping that it will not need to go through with God’s terrible decree, waiting for someone to do something to intervene.<\/span><\/p>\n

When we understand this, we can begin to hear the heavy undertones of criticism in the seemingly complementary phrase, repeated again in this chapter, that Noah “did all that he was commanded.” \u00a0Noah accepted God’s word as is, without arguing or protesting. He was righteous, indeed. But from our leaders, the Torah will teach us to expect more compassionate <\/span>chutzpah.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":76501,"id":76501,"title":"hos11-parent
