{"id":34122,"date":"2018-07-16T14:56:17","date_gmt":"2018-07-16T11:56:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=34122"},"modified":"2022-02-09T23:16:18","modified_gmt":"2022-02-09T21:16:18","slug":"noahs-comfort-zone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/noahs-comfort-zone\/","title":{"rendered":"Noah&#8217;s Comfort Zone"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[363,388],"acf":{"old_id":"34122","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":34002,"related_cahpter":"5","type_929":"2","show_author_image":false,"old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"You can't bring substantial relief to the world without leaving your comfort zone ","content":"<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;And he named him Noah, saying: &#8216;this one will relieve (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yenahamenu<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) us\u2026 from the toil of our hands out of the very soil which the Lord placed under a curse'&#8221; (5:29).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Resh Lakish (a 3<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century rabbi) said: The name does not correspond to its interpretation\u2026&#8221; (Midrash Bereishit Rabbah 25).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yenahamenu<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> resembles &#8216;Noah&#8217;, but they aren&#8217;t identical. &#8216;Noah&#8217; means comfortable\/rest; &#8216;<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yenahamenu<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>&#8216;<\/em> means &#8216;to comfort&#8217;, or relieve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resh Lakish answers: &#8220;Before Noah arose, the waters used to ascend and inundate\u2026 [the dead] in their graves, But when Noah arose, they had rest\u2026&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The midrash resolves the discrepancy by transmitting a tradition about underground water that used to ascend and flood graves for many years, until Noah was born. Noah, therefore, indeed provided <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rest<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in correspondence with the precise interpretation of his name, by preventing water from flooding graves. But by saying this, the midrash also ironically highlights Noah&#8217;s failure to prevent the flood that destroys life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I suspect that even more significantly than resolving the question that it raised, the midrash insinuates that Noah&#8217;s name, and it&#8217;s incongruity with his father&#8217;s expectations, foreshadow his later choices. Noah chooses spiritual comfort. He is righteous, but keeps his distance from evil society, where the righteous cannot feel <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comfortable<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It&#8217;s easier for him to come to the aid of the dead, who don&#8217;t pose a spiritual threat. One cannot, however, bring substantial relief to the world without leaving one&#8217;s <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comfort<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em> zone<\/em> and coming in contact with the evil in it that is very much
