The list opens with the first sinner, the one who dared to disobey the commandment of God and eat the forbidden fruit, an act for which he was punished with the curse of the earth: &#8220;Thorns and thistles shall it sprout for you. \u00a0But your food shall be the grasses of the field. By the sweat of your brow shall you get bread to eat\u201d (Genesis 3:18-19). It ends with hope and consolation, with the birth of Noah: &#8220;This one will provide us relief from our work and from the toil of our hands, out of the very soil with which the Lord placed under a curse\u201d (Genesis 5:29). \u00a0Perhaps from his time the curse ended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our chapter in effect adopts the first creation story (Chapters 1:1-2:4) over the one that appears in Chapter 2. As in chapter 1, so too here, God created \u201cAdam\u201d in the divine image, and woman and man were created together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seven generations from Adam is the character Enoch. Unlike the rest of the characters in the chapter, there is no mention that Enoch died: &#8220;Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, for God took him\u201d (5:24). \u00a0It is possible, perhaps, to understand these words as a description of his death (this is what Rashi, for example, thought). However, if the Torah wished to indicate that he had died, it would certainly have done so without resorting to such vague expressions.
