People can be really jealous of everything: the status of other people, the abilities of other people, the wealth of other people, the health of other people. Cain became filled with jealousy of God’s interest in his brother Abel’s offering.

Anyone who wants to can take Freud to the extreme and imagine that God is the father who likes one son over the other (a phenomenon that is common in the Bible and in life).

And so Spinoza said: “No one envies anyone else unless he is equal to him.”

And if you ask how this relates to the brothers Cain and Abel, here is the explanation:

Spinoza noticed the interesting fact that we only envy people who are comparable to us. No professor of philosophy would be envious of Spinoza or Plato, unless he has lost his mind and has not yet regained his sanity. Therefore, according to Spinoza’s argument, sibling jealousy is the most logical and powerful jealousy, and it is not accidental that the first murder in history is the murder of a brother.

The Polish philosopher Leszek Kolakowski summed up the matter: “We must not live in expectation of a just reward, for this expectation brings bitterness to our lives; we will be angry at the world and may murder our brothers.”

We must not live in expectation of a just reward...we will be angry at the world, and may murder our brothers.
"":null
