Chapter 1 describes the creation of the world, and it ends with Shabbat (the sabbath). \u00a0Chapter 2 describes the Garden of Eden, and it ends with family. It is this theme–family–that is subsumed under the headline (Genesis 2:4): \u00a0\u201cThese are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created.\u201d The \u201cgenerations\u201d are those that are yet to be born–either in the Garden of Eden or outside it. \u00a0Either way, the entire story leads up to (a) family. <\/span><\/p>\n

The ultimate purpose is expressed powerfully at the end: \u201cHence a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, so that they become one flesh\u201d (2:24). \u00a0It should not be assumed that a man will leave his father and mother, and all the more so, that a woman would do this. In the past, there existed cultures in which children became part of the extended family as slaves for labor or in matters of sexuality. \u00a0We still hear of situations like this today. <\/span><\/p>\n

The text says, \u201cHence a man leaves his father and mother.\u201d and in separating from his parents, he strengthens his wife to leave her father and mother (which is often even more difficult). \u00a0Together, they become \u201cone flesh\u201d in order to bear children of their own and establish a family. The entire description of the creation of mankind–the man and the deep sleep and the woman who emerges from him–all this takes place in the Garden of Eden and is designed for this purpose–the setting up of a family. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chapter 1 leads to the sabbath. \u00a0Chapter 2 leads to the
