","content":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the tranquility of the Garden of Eden, the first prohibition is issued: \u00a0\u201cBut as for the tree of knowledge of good and evil, you must not eat of it\u201d (Genesis 2:17). \u00a0Did God desire man\u2019s innocence and his eternal childhood? After all, the innocent child is the one who does not distinguish between good and evil, as the prophet Isaiah states: \u201cFor before the lad knows to reject the bad and choose the good\u2026.\u201d (Isaiah 7:16).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another way to understand \u201cgood and evil\u201d emerges from the words of the \u201cWise Woman of \u00a0Tekoa\u201d to King David. At first, she compliments the king\u2019s wisdom, \u201cmy Lord the king is like an angel of God, listening to \u00a0everything, good and evil\u201d (II Samuel 14:17). She goes on and explains her words, \u2026.\u201cMy Lord is wise like the wisdom of an angel of God, and he knows all that goes on in the land\u201d (II Samuel 14:20). \u00a0Knowing good and evil means, therefore, knowing everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does this mean that God seeks to stymie man\u2019s curiosity, inquisitiveness, wisdom and knowledge? \u00a0Does God strive to keep wisdom to Himself? For example, is the verse in Genesis to be interpreted in the same light as the prohibition found in the Second Temple period book called the Wisdom of Ben Sira? \u00a0Ben Sira states: \u201cNeither seek what is too difficult for you, nor investigate what is beyond your power. Reflect upon what you have been commanded, for what is hidden is not your concern\u201d (3:21-22). Are we to understand the first prohibition of the Torah to refrain from eating \u00a0of the tree of knowledge of good and evil along the lines of the Mishna that warns: \u201cAnyone who looks into four things would be better off if he had not come into this world: what is above, what is below, what is before, and what is after\u201d (Chagiga 2:1)?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We, who have eaten from the forbidden fruit, which led to the loss of our innocence and created \u00a0the desire to inquire and learn, will continue to strive to know good and evil. We will always strive to solve the riddles of the world of \u00a0nature and of human nature.
