What follows is a paraphrase of his argument.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In chapter 2 of Genesis, God places Adam in the Garden to \u201cserve and protect\u201d it \u2014 the overarching principle of ecological responsibility. The paragraph that precedes the description of Adam\u2019s job in the Garden and our job in the world is a description of God\u2019s sabbath. This juxtaposition may not be clear chronologically, for Adam was put in the Garden to work before God could rest, but it is thematically appropriate. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Essentially the Sabbath is about limits. It is about recognizing that we are not just creators but also creations, something we share with every living and non-living thing. Once a week we relinquish our mastery over nature to remind us of the larger truth that with power comes responsibility. The Sabbath is our defense against the heedlessness and hubris that have led human beings time and again to leave in their wake a trail of ecological destruction.
