For years I told myself that at some point I would be able to be like everyone else–to live the narrative of a conventional life, or at least to a degree. \u00a0For years, the conventional narrative of family and parenthood stood there intact and harmonious but unattainable–until I dared to tell myself a new narrative, and discover the magic inherent in the understanding that the story I am telling is more true and whole and harmonious than what society, the law, or any norm would have me think.<\/span><\/p>\n

The two stories of Creation are so different. It is God\u2019s way or God\u2019s ghost writer\u2019s way to teach us about the connection between reality, narrative, and meaning. This is their way of reminding us that it is always possible to read reality completely differently, and that the story we would like to tell is not always the story that is best for us.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two stories of creation open the Book of Genesis, and there is no way to reconcile them. The first is the story of a harmonious creation. It is a peaceful story of creation using speech that describes creations as good, even very good. And then comes Chapter 2, the story of creativity and materiality: earth and the earthling, responsibility and a threat, searching and finding, sin and punishment.<\/span><\/p>\n

We all want, or at least we think we want, the harmonious, calm, egalitarian, simple narrative. But who can really tell such a harmonious narrative about his own creation and his life and his work? Often, the courage to search for another way to tell the story, even if it is broken and partial and a little painful, leads to a story that ends in real, true harmony.<\/span><\/p>\n

These two alternative versions of the story of Creation, and of life, never stop rubbing against each other, challenging each other, undermining each other. \u00a0They force us over and over again to choose the story we want or can tell ourselves, forcing us every day to create the world afresh.<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":54853,"id":54853,"title":"jo24-frame
