Human history begins in Genesis 2:5: \u201cNo shrub of the field was yet on earth and no grasses of the field had yet sprouted, because the Lord God had not yet sent rain upon the earth and there was no man to till the soil.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The story begins with the absence of the human: <\/span>no man <\/span>\u2013 <\/span>Adam ayin<\/span><\/em>. At this stage of <\/span>not-yet man<\/span><\/em>, <\/span><\/i>the growth of vegetation is also stalled \u2013 it has \u2018not-yet\u2019 sprouted. What is missing is rain from heaven and a human being to till the earth.<\/span><\/p>\n

The midrash reads this moment of expectation in terms of what the human might contribute to the process of creation. Although God had already commanded on the third day that the earth should bring forth vegetation, the vegetation had stalled just beneath the earth\u2019s surface. In order to break through the surface, that green growth requires what only a human being can offer: a vision of what is held back and a prayer for its emergence. In Andrew Marvell\u2019s words, \u201cA green thought in a green shade.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In this reverse history of creation, divinely created lushness awaits human consciousness of what is <\/span>not-yet<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/i> Prayer expresses imagination and desire. Without it, the divine gift of rain and the birth of the world\u2019s greenery cannot happen.<\/span><\/p>\n

This mythic midrashic reading of creation lingers over a <\/span>not-yet<\/span><\/em> moment of suspended animation. The world hangs in a kind of limbo. What is blocked is <\/span>tzemicha <\/span><\/em>\u2013 <\/span><\/i>growth, sprouting, blooming. A process which is also a revolutionary moment.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the biblical account, this essential growth process in fact begins only after Adam has been created. (v.9) At the center of the Garden, a tree of knowledge springs up, which brings death and exile in its wake. Later, however, prophets and sages will speak poetically of <\/span>tzemichat ha-ge\u2019ulah<\/span><\/em>, the growth of redemption, of the end of days, when an entirely new realm of experience, a future order will literally break through, spring up, shine forth.<\/span><\/p>\n

With the help of this metaphor, the arrival of the new and the unimaginable, while it is still <\/span>not-yet<\/span><\/em>, can and perhaps must nevertheless be imagined. The Messiah\u2019s name will be <\/span>Tzemach \u2013 a righteous shoot <\/span><\/em>(<\/span><\/i>Jeremiah<\/span> 23:5). Where there is <\/span>tzemicha<\/span><\/em>, something emerges, rises up erect, drawing energy from its base, its tap-root, and from the heavens above. Upwards and downwards, as in Jacob\u2019s ladder, energy courses. Prayer for such a redemption requires a human awareness of what is in the world, of what is not, and of what is
