{"id":33966,"date":"2018-07-16T10:55:42","date_gmt":"2018-07-16T07:55:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=33966"},"modified":"2022-02-07T12:32:22","modified_gmt":"2022-02-07T10:32:22","slug":"milimilim-the-hebrew-corner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/milimilim-the-hebrew-corner\/","title":{"rendered":"MiliMiliM The Hebrew Corner Gen 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[361],"acf":{"old_id":"33966","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":34011,"related_cahpter":"1","type_929":"2","show_author_image":true,"old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"\u05e6\u05dc\u05dd - Tzelem - Image","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it is tempting to begin a feature on selected words from the daily chapter of Tanakh with the iconic Beginning: \u05d1\u05e8\u05d0\u05e9\u05d9\u05ea- <em>Bereishit<\/em>, the first word of Genesis, and the name of the book in Hebrew (and literally: <em>\u201c<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the beginning of\u2026<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u201d), <\/em>we won\u2019t always make the most obvious or expected choice! Our first word is another \u201ctheologically\u201d (and linguistically) central word, the word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzelem<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word appears in verses 26 and 27 of our chapter: \u00a0\u201c(26) And God said, \u201cLet us make man in our image (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be-tzalmeinu<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), after our likeness\u2026. (27) And God created man in His image (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be-tzalmo<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), in the image (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be-tzelem<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) of God He created him; male and female He created them.\u201d Just these two verses raise many questions: Why is the first one in the plural &#8211; who (else) is God referring to? What does the alternation of gender mean in the second verse? And perhaps most importantly: what does the word actually mean? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the predominant Biblical conception of a non-corporeal God &#8211; not to mention the physical variety of the human species &#8211; it can\u2019t mean the straightforward sense of physical image. It must mean some sort of spiritual or moral similarity. Indeed, the medieval commentator R. David Kimchi answers our first question by pointing out that the others that God is addressing can only be the other beings in the rest of Creation &#8211; thus implying that the human partakes of the divine, spiritual attributes of God, as well as the physical, natural characteristics of the animals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In modern Hebrew, the word has been \u201csecularized\u201d into meaning the literal physical image of an object, and has become the root of the word for photography (<\/span><em><b>tz<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">i<\/span><b>l<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">u<\/span><b>m<\/b><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and camera (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ma<\/span><b>tzl<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e<\/span><b>m<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though, as we shall often have occasion to point out in this spot, the layers of Hebrew are always there, accessible and ready to be pressed into service.
