I live in a forest. Or if that is a bit of an exaggeration, let\u2019s just say that I live amid the canopy-covered fringes of deep suburban woods with a stream gently flowing through it, which is enchanting. But living under a tree canopy means that for months, detritus from the foliage – seeds and shells, petals, twigs and leaves – \u00a0fall everywhere, including upon our front walk. I must constantly clean it up, push it aside so it can return to the source from which it came. Whenever we are expecting guests, one of the last things that I do is go out and sweep the front walk. And no one – to date – has ever tripped or slipped.<\/span><\/p>\n

But here\u2019s the thing: no one notices. They would of course notice if I hadn\u2019t swept the walk. They would crunch on all that fallen matter, stumble and perhaps lose their footing. But when the walk is clear, they don\u2019t notice.<\/span><\/p>\n

We often don\u2019t notice when things go right, don\u2019t pay attention when things just hum because they are in the right place doing the right things yielding the right results. This makes Genesis One not just a mythic recounting of how we all got here, but a celebration of noticing, of truly seeing how hard and miraculous and sequenced and fragile and bounded and interconnected our world truly is. It is a paean to not taking things for granted.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the sixth day, when we humans come along, we are called to notice, to support the hidden intricacies of life, and to own up to our role in caring for it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Being made in the image of God, we are bidden to see, to aid and not destroy the world laid before us, to avoid upsetting the miracle of creation, to be sure we keep things humming. \u00a0We are tasked with seeing the invisible miracles that daily grace this earth, how sunlight guides the cycles of wind and rain and warmth and growth that feed earthly-life, how death leads to regrowth, life harbors seed to new life, how the kingdoms of water and land complement each other but should not be allowed to invade and overtake the other, how all creatures are to take from the earth, and give back to the earth, so that all can thrive the only way we can. Together.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then and only then is it Very Good.<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":101636,"id":101636,"title":"-6200f472d4820--6200f472d4821gen1-tree canopy
