In the beginning, in only 31 verses, the world rapidly comes into being. Our foundational Creation Story unfolds with stunning, even unsettling, speed: through simple articulations (“And God said: Let there be…. And there was…”) and repeated acts of division and separation, the world takes shape. What was an inarticulate/unarticulated whole becomes named and distinct entities: day, night, light, darkness, earth, seas, animal, human.

As in birth, the infant’s miraculous first breath signifying a severing from the mother’s being – a separation both mother and child will carry quietly within their distinct selves forever – the Genesis creation can be seen as also a story of setting asunder, of breaking apart. I am thinking not of the later Lurianic Genesis retelling with its light-bearing vessels’ fragmentation, but rather of an original move toward brokenness, born of differentiation, which the Creation story bequeaths us.

The challenge, it seems, is how to be our distinct selves – as individuals, as tribes, as ethnic and religious groups, as nations – while still holding on to concern for and connection to whoever and whatever is not us, whoever and whatever stands across the borders. The challenge – powerfully pronounced in today’s world of enmities and ruptures justified and celebrated – is how to live the brokenness, divisions and separations of our Creation Story (our created story) while ever-striving toward a wholeness of hearts and spirits, lost to the pre-storied realm.

from The Broken Beginning

⧫

In the beginning
it was sudden –
the world

that wasn’t
yet
all at once

emerging
out of formless void –
space

of the infinite
broken
into pieces – God

retreating
to make way
for perfect human

imperfection:
Adam and Eve
dreaming

in the beginning
of a world that wasn’t
and wasn’t yet

broken either

Poetic extract is from A Messenger Comes, by Rachel Tzvia Back, Singing Horse Press 2012

How to live the separations of our Creation Story (our created story) while ever-striving toward a wholeness of hearts and spirits
"":null
