When the Holy One, Blessed be He, created His World, He took counsel with the Torah. And how was such a Torah written?! <strong>In black fire on white fire!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Such dramatic teaching is characteristic of what seems to have been \u201cinteractive\u201d sermons of the sort delivered in the synagogues of Talmudic times. Let us join such an ancient study session. Imagine a rabbinic teacher suggesting his congregation ponder the following questions: How could the revelation given to Moses on Mount Sinai have existed before the world itself came into being? How could God have consulted with such a pre-existent Torah in the act of creation? How could such a personified Torah have existed in written form? The answer to such rhetorical questions invites us to engage in an exercise in visual imagination. We are challenged to try to visualize God in the very act of creation with a primeval Torah open before Him &#8212; a primordial text written in fiery letters of black fire on a scroll of white fire!<\/p>\n<p>Let this remarkably creative exposition of the first verse of the Bible serve as a foretaste of our study of the Tanakh as it unrolls before us chapter by chapter. Our on-going study of Scripture will be enhanced by including such highly imaginative elaborations as the one we have encountered above.
