Others are blocked from view because we read them too often, are too familiar with them. The challenge of the opening of the Book of Genesis is to strip off our memories and the habits that prevent us from being shocked and surprised.<\/p>\n<p>Here are two offerings from a fresh read of Bereshit: (1) It is noteworthy that we live in a uni-verse, a coherent interactive unity that emerges with a shocking degree of regularity and predictability. This \u201clawful\u201d quality of the cosmos is revealed in Genesis through the narrative of a mindful single Creator responsible for it all. (2) The peshat of Genesis (literal, contextual meaning), contrary to contemporary fundamentalists of all stripes, is not of a creation out of nothing, but rather, a creation out of chaos, as Rashi affirms in his commentary.<\/p>\n<p>As God begins the work of creating, there is already tohu va-vohu, chaos. And that swirling, churning chaos is the very locus of where creating happens. The Biblical language for that is that \u201cthe ruach, breath of God, hovers over the tehom, the deep.\u201d That is always where all creating occurs: from the undomesticated, the chaotic, the swirling welter of complexity, patterns, regularities, life emerges.<\/p>\n","image":{"ID":101655,"id":101655,"title":"-6200fbeb845a3--6200fbeb845a4gen1-face
