929 Invites You To Read Tanakh\u00a0<\/b>With New Eyes\u2026<\/b><\/h1>\n

Welcome!<\/b><\/p>\n

This is 929 English, dedicated to creating a global Jewish conversation around issues that unite and divide us, but always anchored in, based on, or inspired by the formative text of our common Jewish heritage, the Tanakh, the Hebrew Bible.<\/span><\/p>\n

929 is the number of chapters in the Tanakh, the Hebrew Bible: from “In the Beginning” of Genesis chapter 1 through the Torah, the Prophets and all the Writings, to the end of II Chronicles. \u00a0On Chanukah 5775, December 21, 2014, the first cycle (ever!) of the joint reading of Tanakh began. This past summer 2018, we began the second cycle.<\/span><\/p>\n

Everybody, reading together, yet each individual reading on their own. Through the app, on the website, or with a printed volume of Tanakh in your hand; on the train, at a cafe, or at home; with your morning coffee, or at night, in bed; with friends, with children, or as a personal challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n

Every day, at midnight, the daily chapter on the 929 website changes, and the next chapter appears, along with creative readings, pluralistic interpretations and short commentaries, audio and video clips, graphic art, and even narration of the text, for those who prefer just to listen.<\/span><\/p>\n

The lively discourse surrounding the chapter of the day takes place both on social networks and in study groups, encounters and events in the real world. Taking part are leading academics, cultural icons, public figures, artists, and writers, both men and women.<\/span><\/p>\n

929 calls on you to rediscover the riches of the bestselling book in history.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why Tanakh?<\/b><\/p>\n

Countless words have already been written about it. It is a foundational text, a common denominator on an international level, whose stories and ideas reach out and echo within our own lives, to this very day.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a book, Tanakh is amazingly rich: thrilling, inspiring, and moving \u2013 but also perplexing, contradictory, thought-provoking and controversial. It encompasses a kaleidoscope of subjects: from history, politics and geometry through to law, ritual, design and cuisine. It offers us the journeys of individuals and the sagas of families, private loves and national empire-building, moments of kindness and epic wars, amusing anecdotes and myths that transcend cultures, angry prophecies alongside tender poetry, stirring legends and words of deep philosophy.<\/span><\/p>\n

What Are We Offering?<\/b><\/p>\n

Everyone can get involved! There are three levels of involvement. The first, most basic one is to read the daily chapter of Tanakh: on the website, or from a book. From Sunday to Thursday, one chapter each day, in sequence, and in line with a shared timetable. It doesn\u2019t matter if it is short or long, complex or simple, or even if the subject matter leaves us hanging \u2013 the pace allows us to focus on one chapter a day.<\/span><\/p>\n

Friday and Shabbat\/Saturday is an opportunity to complete the chapters that we have missed, or go more deeply into those that we have already read. The website will have a weekly summary of the main points in the chapters that we have read, along with some additional content.<\/span><\/p>\n

The second level of involvement then is to engage with the materials on the site. 929 English will feature daily content centered on basic issues within society, ethical dilemmas, questions of gender and social justice, democracy and governance and other relevant and pertinent issues \u2013 all through the prism of Tanakh.<\/span><\/p>\n

Would you like to write? That is the third level: you can react to the issues on the site, in comments, and you can even write your own original piece! We are soliciting contributions to post on the site. A typical post is 350-450 words long and illuminates some aspect or theme of the chapter under discussion.<\/span><\/p>\n
